Joburg M2 highway finally closed for refurbishment, use alternatives urges JMPD

The M2 highway in Johannesburg, which was supposed to be barricaded on Thursday morning at 6am is now closed. This is according to JMPD Spokesperson Wayne Minnaar.

Some motorists still continued to use the route on Thursday even after the City announced its closure.

Minnaar says the delay was caused by not having enough barricades in place to close the highway completely.

Motorists are advised to use alternative routes going into Joburg CBD.

We encourage motorists that if you are going to the western side of the city to make use of the N12 or N1 and exit at 14th Avenue or use Malibongwe Drive or Beyers Naudé.

Wayne Minnaar, Spokesperson, JMPD

And if you are going to Sandton or Rosebank use N3 North or N1 and exit at Rivonia Road or William Nicol.

Huge traffic backlogs and gridlocks around several interchanges, as well as alternate routes leading in and out of the city centre, are expected.

The major refurbishment of the M2 highway is set to continue until October 2019.
