50% of Taxi commuters fear for their safety - poll

Research into public perceptions of taxi use, safety, crime, and related violence found that commuters were not happy with the way in which the industry is run and managed.

The Institute for Race Relations, in conjunction with the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom (FNF), has released the findings of a poll conducted in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal into the use of taxis.

Head of politics and governance at the IRR, Gareth van Onselen says 50% of the respondents perceived taxi drivers as aggressive.

70% of respondents said that they have seen or experienced a taxi driver breaking the rules of the road and more respondents felt that taxis were more unroadworthy and a lot of more disturbing findings.
