'There is a significant association between porn use and loneliness'

Talking Sex
Dr Eve talks about the biodirectional relationship between porn viewing and loneliness.

On Thursday, clinical sexologist Dr Eve published a Twitter poll to try and gage some of the reasons why you may watch porn.

Some respondents questioned the poll, saying people's reasons for watching porn can vary from pure entertainment to looking for tips to spice up their sex lives.

She joined Eusebius McKaiser for this week's 'Taking Sex' segment to elaborate and explore the biodirectional relationship between porn viewing and loneliness.

Referencing research from the Journal of Sex & Marital Therapy, Dr Eve explains that if you are watching porn you are more likely to be lonely and if you are lonely you are more likely to turn to porn to to overcome the feeling of loneliness.

What they revealed was that there is a significant and positive association between porn use and loneliness.

Dr Eve, Clinical sexologist

So I thought, lets talk about this and see how people are putting their loneliness into porn and how people are putting porn into loneliness.

She says the survey also looks at relationship distress.

What this research showed is that if you are feeling distant in your relationship, you are going to feel lonely which means you are going to go to porn. If you consume porn you will feel lonely and you will have distance in your relationship.

Dr Eve, Clinical sexologist

Th definition of loneliness here is a lack of connection, lack of companionship. It is really feeling that I am less connected to people and to communities and to as sense of belonging than I would like to feel. What porn does is fill up that gap for you very nicely but then does it lead you to feeling better, more connected to your relationship or more lonely and guilt ridden because you have gone there?
