Stats SA has recorded a marginal increase in divorce orders between 2013 and 2017, with customary marriages down by 34.9% in 2017.
The organisation says more than half of divorces occurred within the first 14 years of marriage.
Litigation Attorney Richard Chemaly says the statistics do not reveal the rationale behind it, but says one can assume that there is less moral or religious intention holding marriages together.
You will notice that most marriages, outside of the Western Cape, take place in the Department of Home Affairs, so there is less moral or religious intention or glue holding marriages together but there is no way to say for certain.— Richard Chemaly,Litigation Attorney
Chemaly says you can get a divorce for under R 1000 on the internet, if it is uncontested.
The key thing there being that it has to be uncontested and you will often find that many divorces get really ugly and last a couple of years and cost nearly R 1 million.— Richard Chemaly,Litigation Attorney
