[LISTEN] Unclear whether Babes Wodumo has laid a charge against Mampintsha
While musician Bongekile 'Babes Wodumo' Simelane has thanked South Africans for their messages of support following her assault early Monday morning, it is uncertain whether or not she has a laid a charge against the perpetrator.
A video in which her long time boyfriend and fellow musician Mandla 'Mampintsha' Maphumulo is seen slapping the artist more than once has gone viral on social media, sparking outrage from the public.
KwaZulu-Natal police have confirmed that they are investigating an inquest docket and trying to establish the authenticity of the video.
Eyewitness News reporter Bonga Dlulane is following the story.
They are investigating an inquest docket and trying to verify the authenticity of the video but they also want the victim to come forward, it always helps when it goes to prosecutions and also helps the investigation.Bonga Dlulane, Reporter - EWN
What we do know right now is that there has been speculation that she is at the police station going to lay a charge but that has not been confirmed yet. Police say they are trying to locate Babes herself to see if they can try and convince her to tell them what happened exactly.Bonga Dlulane, Reporter - EWN
National Police Commissioner Khehla Sitole and Minister of Arts and Culture Nathi Mthethwa have both condemned the attack.
1. We're absolutley horrified by the actions of Musician Mapmpintsha @MampintshaNuz caught on video where he brutally abuses Internationally celebrated Artist @BABESWODUMO. We do not only condemn this senseless act but call on @BABESWODUMO to immediately press charges against him pic.twitter.com/K7W1cyO0aO— Min. Nathi Mthethwa (@NathiMthethwaSA) March 4, 2019
This is not the first time Maphumulo has been accused of abusing Simelane.
In an interview with Metro FM's Masechaba Ndlovu last year, Simelane was questioned about the abuse she has suffered but was unable to respond.
