Firefighters battle blaze in Alexandra

A fire has broken out at a shack settlement near Marlboro Road in Alexandra, Johannesburg.

The fire is said to have started on Tuesday afternoon after an electrical pylon fell over.

While over 20 shacks are believed to have been affected, spokesperson at Emergency Management Services Nana Radebe says there have been no reported injuries or fatalities.

For now we are still busy with firefighting. We had battled to gain access but for now we have fire engines that are on scene. Water tankers just arrived because there is a number of shacks on fire.

Fortunately we have not received any calls of injuries or fatalities.

We will do a preliminary investigation just to conclude what had caused the fire, for now we have no idea.
