We hope to achieve a more depoliticised sports industry - AfriForum

Werner Human, Deputy chief executive at Afriforum explains why it, alongside Solidarity, is taking the sports quota issue to court.

Lobby group AfriForum and trade union Solidarity is heading to the Labour Court in Johannesburg in a bid to tackle the sports ministry’s transformation charter.

The union group has long opposed the racial quotas that govern sports in South Africa.

It states that if its application is successful it would mean an end to politicising sports in South Africa and that the focus would then rather be on developing and using the talent of all athletes and players.

This application is opposed by the minister of sport, the South African Rugby Union, Cricket South Africa, Athletics South Africa and Netball South Africa.

Werner Human, AfriForum deputy chief executive says its focus has been on the constitutional issues.

What we hope to achieve is a more depoliticised sports industry. We believe that the sports industry has been deeply intertwined with politics.

Werner Human, Deputy chief executive - Afriforum

We have not even once gotten in the specific selection of the players. Our specific issue is the issue of quotas which is why we are heading to the court.

Werner Human, Deputy chief executive - Afriforum

The trade union group is set to tell the court that Sports Minister Thokozile Xasa has the mandate to slash funding of any sporting body that doesn’t adhere to transformation rules.
