Sanef condemns Malema's actions towards journalist Karima Brown

The Economic Freedom fighters(EFF) leader Julius Malema has been criticised heavily for publishing on Twitter a cellphone number of a political analyst and Talk Radio 702 presenter Karima Brown last night.

Following that, the veteran journalist has since been receiving verbally abusive and threatening messages.

This comes after Brown seemingly accidentally posted an editorial brief in an EFF media WhatsApp group relating to the party's invitation to an 'EFF Breakfast With The Elderly' function.

Malema then took a screenshot of Brown's response, and posted it on Twitter saying, 'Karima Brown is sending moles to our breakfast with the elders tomorrow, she incidentally sends the message to the @EFFSouthAfrica media WhatsApp group and deleted it immediately.'

Brown then stated that she had received threats of assault and rape as well as racist slurs.

Deputy chairperson of the South African National Editors Forum Katy Katopodis says the Sanef condemns Malema's actions in the strongest possible way.

There is no way that we can condone such terrible threats against a journalist or anyone in South Africa. For Karima Brown to be threatened with rape and murder is totally unacceptable. This is not a threat to Karima as an individual, but a threat to media freedom as a whole.

Katy Katopodis, Deputy Chairperson - South African National Editors Forum

We call on the EFF leader to call on his supporters to stop threatening Karima. They need to hear the message from him directly.

Katy Katopodis, Deputy Chairperson - South African National Editors Forum

Brown responded and she said she will not be intimidated or scared by the attacks on her by the party, its leaders or supporters.
