Is your car one of thousands to have been recalled so far this year?

According to consumer journalist Wendy Knowler, thousands of cars from over half a dozen big-name manufacturers have been recalled in South Africa since the end of last year.

BMW is one of the brands affected, with about 1.6 million recalled worldwide.

However, of the 2 864 vehicles affected in South Africa since the technical campaign was expanded worldwide at the end of 2018, only 50 vehicles have been serviced.

The recall is linked to a leak in the EGR valve cooler which could - in 'extreme' scenarios' - combined with soot at high temperatures and lead to the intake manifold melting, which could, in turn, cause a fire to break out.

There’s another far bigger recall which South Africans have been shockingly slow to respond to. Vehicles made by 19 different manufacturers were recalled worldwide in 2015 to replace their potentially deadly airbags.

The airbags were installed in cars between 2002 to 2015. To date, 23 people have been killed by them around the world, and about 300 injured.

According to Knowler, the risk is increasing all the time - the older the airbag, the higher the risk. Heat and humidity also increase the risk.
