EFF has toxic masculinity and misogyny in how it deals with women - Karima Brown

Karima Brown has come under attack from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and its supporters on social media for the second time, in less than a year.

An EFF media Whatsapp group advertised a meeting of elders and Brown sent a message to journalists on the group by mistake. EFF members then revealed a screenshot of her message accusing her of being a government agent, which revealed her personal cell number.

This incident led to Brown being threatened with death and rape by EFF supporters.

Speaking to Bongani Bingwa, Brown says most newsrooms work with teams keep a watch on current stories that could be of interest.

They talk to their producers about those events and you would say to them, check out for me if this person is going to speak about the following issues and look at a particular news angle.

That is precisely what I did and it is part of what I do at eNCA. The problem with the EFF is that they presume to know what my jobs are. They don't actually know what I do.

But they spoke very definitively yesterday when they said they know for a fact that I don't assign reporters, I don't tell people what to do. Part of what I do at eNCA apart from The Fix, is work with the political reporters and political editor Vuyo Mvoko as well as the Jane Dutton Show.

It was for the Jane Dutton Show that I had looked at this interesting meeting that the EFF was going to have with the elders.

She adds that this is not the first time the EFF has done something of this kind. Pauli van Wyk, Ferial Haffajee, Ranjeni Munusamy and other reporters have also received the same treatment from EFF.

They have taken particular exception to female reporters that have investigated issues that they have been involved with. There is a distinct way of toxic masculinity and misogyny in the way they deal with women.
