South African Municipal Workers' Union (Samwu) could be placed under administration after incriminating discoveries by the Labour Registrar Advocate Lehlohonolo Molefe.
In an exclusive report, EWN says the registrar has found large scale financial irregularities which include a loan amounting to R12 million that the union received from VBS.
Samwu has not complied with the provisions of the Labour Relations Act.
EWN senior reporter Thetho Mahlakoana, who is following this story, says the key issue is the VBS link.
We have seen Samwu as one of the loudest voices in the public discourse space protesting the fact that officials in these municipalities involved in the VBS scandal, had to account or be dismissed.— Thetho Mahlakoana, Senior reporter - EWN
And now we find that they themselves have been implicated in the VBS scandal but also between 2013 and now, there has been absolutely no accountability. They have been cited for qualified audit reports and not submitting financial statements.— Thetho Mahlakoana, Senior reporter - EWN
Even in those statements that are submitted there are such irregularities that it is basically appalling.— Thetho Mahlakoana, Senior reporter - EWN
