Using each child's unique learning 'fingerprint' to make learning easier

Creative parenting expert Nikki Bush chats to Phemelo about the concept of unique learning styles.

She explains that everybody is different in the way that they take in, store and retrieve information and that this 'fingerprint' holds the key to effective learning.

If we can discover that unique fingerprint in our children, then as they get older we can teach them about their own unique learning fingerprint, their style, it makes learning so much easier.

I think the more aware you are, the more you can build up your skills base and your strengths.

Nikki Bush, Creative parenting expert

The three main learning styles, says Bush, are visual, kinesthetic or tactile, and auditory.

We're all all three, but some of us are more one, than the other.

Nikki Bush, Creative parenting expert

She adds that aside from parents needing to discover their child's learning style, the teacher's role in accommodating all these styles is also very important.

A good teacher knows how to present in such a way that they would tap into the visual learner, the kinesthetic learner and the auditory learner all at the same time.

Nikki Bush, Creative parenting expert

Bush adds that these different styles continue playing a role in learning when pupils move on to tertiary education. She says, for example, that getting notes on slides instead of taking handwritten notes during lectures can result in a student remembering less of the lecture content.
