[LISTEN] Weekend Breakfast Profile with Fiona Ramsay

On the Weekend Breakfast Show, Phemelo Motene sits down with acclaimed actress, academic and international voice coach Fiona Ramsay.

It transpires that her childhood dream had been to become a ballerina, not an actress.

I'll go and watch ballet anywhere in the world, it doesn't matter who's doing it... I just love it, it transports me.

Fiona Ramsay, Actress and international voice coach

Along with being transported, recharging her batteries on safari is also important to Ramsay.

There's no time in the bush. You get up early and you do reflect, you recharge, you revitalise.

Looking back on her varied career, she says one of her biggest challenges as a voice coach was developing the voices for international star Idris Elba for his leading turn in the 2013 film 'Mandela: Long Road to Freedom'.

It was a daunting task. He wasn't South African, there was a lot of expectation, there was lot of derision. People were not particularly happy - when are we going to tell our own stories?

Fiona Ramsay, Actress and international voice coach

We developed four voices for Mandela.

We all know the clip of Mandela when he was a young man and we all know him when he came out of prison and his vocal qualities then, but in between we had to imagine.

Ramsay's latest project is embarking on a PhD, concentrating on a review of her own body of work as an actress.

What it constitutes is actually fascinating. It's looking back at the archive of my own work, revisiting one or two projects and seeing the decisions so my own career in relation to what was happening historically in terms of arts, policies and obviously apartheid.
