Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Communications is calling for the immediate removal of Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) chairperson, Manyaba Ruben Mohlaloga.
In February the convicted fraudster was sentenced to 20 years behind bars for defrauding the Land Bank of R6 million in 2012.
Mohlaloga is appealing the sentence, but despite his conviction remains in his position at ICASA.
Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Communications, Hlengiwe Mkhize explains why there has been a delay in removing him.
The committee was decisive and clear when he was found guilty, but of course, through parliamentary processes, there was some intervention and hence, a delay in removing him.— Hlengiwe Mkhize, Chairperson - Portfolio Committee on Communications
Questions are also being raised as to why, with a fraud case hanging over him, Mohlaloga was appointed from the portfolio committee on agriculture to ICASA.
There is what you call the vetting part, the security part, of all these boards and I think some things were missed at that point. Really they should have picked it up...I don't know how they missed this one when it was something serious.— Hlengiwe Mkhize, Chairperson - Portfolio Committee on Communications
