[LISTEN] 'Combi Courts or resignation letters!' MEC Mazibuko's leaked audio

According to AmaBhungane Centre for Investigative Journalism, an audio recording of Gauteng Sports and Recreation MEC Faith Mazibuko allegedly demanding staff members to deliver sporting facilities before the elections has been leaked.

(Listen to the audio at the end of the article)

In the audio Mazibuko can be heard demanding these facilities be completed without following the correct tender processes and legal prescripts.

Combi courts or resignation letters! That's what I want!

Minister Faith Mazibuko - leaked audio

Journalist at Amabhungane Centre for Journalism Micah Reddy who is investigating this, says the audio shows how cynical politicians can be especially when it comes to elections and ensuring service delivery.

It shows that the MEC was putting pressure on civil servants to roll out these combi courts despite the fact that they point out that there were legal obstacles and that they would have to go through a competitive tender process and open procurement process.

Micah Reddy, Journalist - Amabhungane Centre for Journalism

Despite all of that she will hear none of that and insists on lambasting her staff. They say repeatedly that there is no legal mechanism in place to short cut a tender process, it has to be opened and it has to go through a competitive process.

Micah Reddy, Journalist - Amabhungane Centre for Journalism

These processes are in place for a reason, to ensure accountability, to ensure that things are done fairly and to ensure that money isn't squandered. But she would appear to have very little time for process and resolves to bully her staff in a despicable way.

Micah Reddy, Journalist - Amabhungane Centre for Journalism

He adds that this audio underlines how toxic and politicised work environments can be for civil servants.
