Hawks bust Cape Town immigration lawyer on charges of fraud and forgery

Prominent immigration lawyer, Craig Smith, his wife, and their employee were arrested on Monday for fraud, forgery, racketeering, and money laundering.

Hawks Western Cape Spokesperson Captain Philani Nkwalase tells CapeTalk's Kieno Kammies that the arrest relates to fraudulent activities conducted within the company previously owned by Smith.

The company was later registered to his wife, Cornelia Smith.

Its core business was to assist foreign nationals to obtain temporary or permanent documentation into South Africa.

It is alleged that the company, it's employees and management aided some unqualifying foreign nationals in ensuring that they get some documentation and that included fraudulent activities like forgery.

The accused appeared in the Cape Town Magistrate's Court on Tuesday. Cornelia Smith and the employee were released on R1 million and R1000 bail respectively.

Craig Smith remains in custody and his formal bail hearing will be heard on Friday.

The investigation is finalised from our side and now it is just a matter of the administration of justice.
