Gauteng ANC 'embarrassed', demands apology from Mazibuko for 'racist' remarks

The ANC in Gauteng says it is embarrassed by a leaked recording of Gauteng's sport, arts, culture and recreation MEC Faith Mazibuko.

Gauteng ANC secretary, Jacob Khawe says the utterances of Mazibuko heard on the recording labeling government employees as Indians and whites were uncalled for.

In the recording, Mazibuko is heard telling staff members to do everything in their power to start rolling out combi courts stating "I don't want stories, I want combi courts!"

We find these utterances very disturbing and embarrassing and we have called the MEC to come and explain to us what could've been the circumstances of such utterances.

Jacob Khawe, Gauteng secretary - ANC

We have asked her to issue a public apology to the officials and to the people of Gauteng.

Jacob Khawe, Gauteng secretary - ANC

We were not requesting her. We were telling her.

Khawe says he told Mazibuko at 9am on Thursday that an apology is expected before 2pm.

Mazibuko explained to him that she was putting pressure on staff members not meeting their targets on the construction of the combi courts.

Her explanation was that if a department did not honour the promises made to communities by the end of a financial year, it would be deemed to have failed in its obligations.

But Khawe insists that she should have used positive words to encourage her team and not racist remarks.

She knows the ANC's and government stance and there is no stance on Indian or white woman not being deployed in departments. We have senior managers who are white who are not viewed by their colour but their performance.

Jacob Khawe, Gauteng secretary - ANC

It's a character issue more than a system issue. We are dealing with a character than a system that says she is pro-corruption, no, she uttered irresponsible words.
