Red Cross Children's Hospital helped save my child, mom shares

It's been two years since young 10-year-old Rachel Ancer received a life-saving stem cell donation.

Rachel was seven when she was diagnosed with an extremely rare bone marrow failure condition known as pure red cell aplasia.

Her mother Jean Luyt says Rare Diseases SA and doctors at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital G1 unit played a key role in her daughter's recovery.

They had to discover what was causing [her illness] and that's where the expertise of the Red Cross Children's Hospital and the marvellous doctors and international collaborators did help.

She says the hospital staff at Red Cross provided a great deal of care, compassion and comfort during the trying time of finding a donor and depending on blood transfusions.

To the team that was at Red Cross and the incredible Dr Marc Hendricks who was our primary doctor - they were phenomenal holding our hand through this process.

Rachel is now an active child in Grade 4 and her health has completely transformed, her mom shares.

We couldn't have done this journey without them.
