Political analyst Sanusha Naidoo says the ANC is contradicting its own objectives to restore integrity to the party.
This, she says, is evident in the party's top 10 electoral list submitted to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) this week.
Controversial ANC leaders including Bathabile Dlamini, Nomvula Mokonyane, Mosebenzi Zwane and Malusi Gigaba are on the party’s list of candidates for Parliament.
These names have this controversy and have been implicated in terms of evidence in the Zondo state capture commission.— Sanusha Naidoo, Senior researcher - South African Foreign Policy Initiative
You can't talk about having a list of people with integrity, because it contradicts what they are trying to achieve.— Sanusha Naidoo, Senior researcher - South African Foreign Policy Initiative
Dlamini and Gigaba were found to have deliberately mislead the courts while Zwane and Mokonyane faced serious accusations of corruption and bribery.
Naidoo argues internal dynamics and factions within the ANC means that ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa is forced to keep some of the "usual suspects" in a whirlwind of contradictions.
Ramaphosa inherited a very difficult party to manage... He doesn't really have the leverage or influence... He's caught by the dynamics of the party.— Sanusha Naidoo, Senior researcher - South African Foreign Policy Initiative
