[LISTEN] Ahmed Kathrada Foundation calls for Faith Mazibuko's axing

The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation is calling for the axing for Gauteng Sports and Recreation MEC Faith Mazibuko after she demanded staff members to deliver sporting facilities in an attempt to gain support for the African National Congress (ANC) ahead of elections.

In a leaked audio recording, Mazibuko is heard threatening her staff with dismissal if they failed to flout regulations and build combi courts ahead of May.

She also says "We empower you, you are not empowered. Which department has an Indian that is a CFO, and an HOD who is a mlungu (white)? Ayikho (There isn't one) including national (departments). You must thank me for empowering you. So don't sabotage me, you better do your work or get out (sic)."

She has since apologised for 'the tone and the improper language' she used towards her head of department and chief financial officer in the meeting.

The Kathrada Foundation has described her utterances as racist and sexist.

Executive director of the Kathrada Foundation Neeshan Balton says Mzibuko's statements indicate that her primary concern is about delivery for electoral results.

All along for the last 12 months that these projects have been on budget, this kind of push for delivery did not come about but because elections are around the corner there is this pressure and almost forcing people to want to do the wrong thing.

Neeshan Balton, Executive director - Kathrada Foundation

The tone and content is abusive. One can only imagine what it must have been like sitting in the room.

Neeshan Balton, Executive director - Kathrada Foundation

Our call is for the provincial government to act. That the ANC wants to institute its own its own process, I think that is fine, my worry is that the integrity committee merely makes recommendations and in previous occasions where it did make recommendations around a former MEC and Chief Whip, those were not accepted an overturned.
