Eskom stage on load shedding
Stage 4 load shedding

Ministry of Public Enterprises spokesperson, Adrian Lackay says Eskom's problems impact the country's already ailing economy.

South Africans face another yet another day in the dark as Eskom continues with the implementation of stage 4 load shedding.

Ministry of Public Enterprises spokesperson, Adrian Lackay speaks to CapeTalk's Africa Melane about the current energy situation.

Lackay says government is working to stabilise Eskom.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has noted efforts to restore power to the Cahora Bassa hydroelectric system in Mozambique which has been affected by a powerful cyclone.

Due to the collapse of Cahora Bassa, 1000 MW was lost to the national grid.

There are other big power stations in the country where the units are not operating optimally. There is a systematic breakdown that occurs regularly.

Adrian Lackay, Spokesperson - Department of Public Enterprises

Eskom's focus for the past 48 hours has been to repair the units that are down in the country and to try to improve generation capability in the country.

Adrian Lackay, Spokesperson - Department of Public Enterprises

Lackay says Eskom's ability to build up a reserve or an emergency margin has diminished since last year, resulting in the current crisis.

Our bigger problem going forward would be, how do we restore Eskom's capability to generate enough electricity to have reserve margin so that when a crisis hit we don't sit where we are now?

Adrian Lackay, Spokesperson - Department of Public Enterprises

The urgent priority would be to get power stations back online that can help alleviate stage 4 load shedding.

Adrian Lackay, Spokesperson - Department of Public Enterprises

Lackay says Eskom's problems need to be dealt with urgently to stop load shedding as it impacts the already ailing economy.

Every day you have stage 4 load shedding the losses to the economy is substantial.

Adrian Lackay, Spokesperson - Department of Public Enterprises
