'Diesel shipment arriving on Tuesday will bring big relief to the grid'

Eskom demand management senior general manager Andrew Etzinger talks to CapeTalk's Africa Melane about the practicalities related to the latest bout of load shedding.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has acknowledged 'design flaws' causing the Madupi and Kusile power plants to under deliver.

He says those plants working would solve the energy problems, and adds that Eskom now knows the nature of the problem at these two plants.

Specialists have applied their minds to it and now we know why they are not at optimum levels.

The plants need to be up and running, he says.

A clear repair plan will be developed by the end of March, he says.

Approximately 18 000 megawatts - or 40% - of energy produced is currently unavailable with 8 generator units currently down for boiler tube leak maintenance.

It takes close to a week to repair the boiler tube leaks, says Etzinger.

He confirms load shedding will continue until Wednesday.

The dilemma is while those are repaired, others will go out.

He says a diesel shipment to run the open-cycle gas turbines arrives on Tuesday, which will "be a game-changer".

It will give us big relief on the grid.

Cahora Bassa, South Africa's largest energy trading partner, being restored, will also bring relief, he explains.

Unfortunately, it will continue until Wednesday. Until then it is going to be tough. It is going to be stage 4 load shedding.
