Ward 54
The tribunal approved an application for a new skyscraper in Sea Point but residents are concerned about the building's scale.

Ward 54 councillor, Nicola Jowell says is concerned that the tribunal for the North West District has disregarded the objections by residents with regards to the building of the 18 story skyscraper.

The tribunal approved a land use application for a new skyscraper in Sea Point by developer Berman Brothers Group.

The 18 story building will reserve 20% of the 140 flats for “affordable” housing.

Jowell says she is in support of the inclusionary housing but concerned that the building will be 18 stories high in an area known for 8 stories.

The community is a bit concerned about the scale of the building and what it does to the surrounding infrastructure.

Nicola Jowell, Councillor - Ward 54

She says some of the objections by residents include traffic congestions in the area, noise pollution and negative impact on tourism.

The building of that size will have a greater impact on the surrounding area. We are concerned that some of those objections were overruled.

Nicola Jowell, Councillor - Ward 54

There has to be a balance between all the organisations and the needs of the community and everybody needs to have representation without compromising one element or the other and that's a hard balance to find.

Nicola Jowellm, Councillor - Ward 54

The inclusion housing in this building is fantastic and we should be seeing more and more of that across the city where developers are making that provision, but at the cost of another 10 stories, I am not sure if that meets the needs of the community.

Nicola Jowellm, Councillor - Ward 54
