Gauteng water supply affected in some areas due to load shedding

Joburg water says there is sufficient water coming into its reservoirs and towers despite the impact of load shedding.

There has been some concern from the public after Rand Water reported that two of its most sensitive pumping stations could come under pressure, affecting the water supply during prolonged stage 4, 5 or 6 power cuts.

The company says if this continues to be a daily occurrence, water restrictions will be imposed.

Joburg Water has also warned that if load shedding persists for nearly four hours, pockets of areas will have water shortages or low pressure because it uses electricity to pump water from the reservoir into its towers.

Joburg Water spokesperson, Isaac Dludlu says highland areas, as well as Brixton and surrounding areas, will be particularly affected.

What happens is whenever the power goes off, the tower will lose water quicker, hence the people in highland areas are affected much more than anyone else. Those who are getting their feed directly from the reservoir, the reservoir is able to feed people with water for a minimum of about eight hours after the power has gone off.

We are still getting enough supply from Rand Water, it is just a problem of making sure we are able to refill the reservoirs and towers to capacity.

Brixton, Auckland Park and Crosby have been giving us quite a lot of problems but we managed to restore services now, it may not be the entire area but people should start having water.
