Beira hospital badly damaged, with only one unit operational

15 000 People are missing after Cyclone Idai slammed into Mozambique last Thursday, with the death toll in the hundreds.

As relief efforts continue, EWN's Ahmed Cajee gives an update on the situation in Beira where the cyclone made landfall.

Cajee visited a city hospital with disaster relief organisation Gift of the Givers and describes the dire circumstances facing hospital authorities.

Due to the damage to the roof there is water on the floor of the corridors.

Ahmed Cajee, Reporter - EWN

Currently the trauma unit is the only open unit and the only functioning unit in the hospital.

As for the operations centre as well as the recovery rooms, that can't be used - hospital officials would like that fixed as soon as possible so they can ensure that the critical patients do get attended to.

Cajee says ongoing downpours hamper relief efforts, but the outlook for the rest of the day is encouraging.

There is no rain forecast for the rest of today so that is a great sign for the relief aid organisations, but if and when the rains come through relief efforts are halted and the crisis increases.

Ahmed Cajee, Reporter - EWN

It looks like relief efforts are set to continue for the rest of the afternoon and heading into tomorrow
