Princess Irene Buthelezi, the wife of Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi, has died.
The 89-year-old died after a long illness on Monday, according to the party's official statement.
The couple had been married for 67 years.
Twitter has been inundated with messages of condolences and the Buthelezi family has asked for privacy at this time.
Among those paying tribute are UDM leader Bantu Holomisa, Good party leader Patricia De Lille, DA chief whip John Steenhuisen, the EFF and the ANC.
The Presidency has also issued a statement sending condolences.
