Eskom is slaughtering small businesses and the many jobs they support

The 90 000 job scare in the mining industry [due to Eskom] may pale into insignificance…. It will be five or 10 times the number the mining industry is talking about…

Load shedding and above-inflation electricity price hikes are crippling small businesses, warned the Small Business Institute (SBI) on Monday.

…If the situation is not resolved urgently, we are headed for a devastating winter. And our economy, which has yet to recover from years of policy instability, will be dealt another blow…

Bernard Swanepoel, executive director - Small Business Institute

The SBI says it expects small businesses to create 90% of all jobs in South Africa by 2030.

On Monday, the Minerals Council South Africa warned that more than 90 000 mining employees would lose their jobs in the next three years due to the tariff hikes given to Eskom.

Eskom has 48 000 employees - 66% more than it needs, according to a World Bank study.

The Money Show’s Bruce Whitfield interviewed Bernard Swanepoel, executive director at the SBI.
