Journalists discuss the political significance of the province and how KZN regional politics affects the bigger election picture.

The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) has been struggling with a decline in support in the political battleground of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN).

Senior eNCA reporter Samkele Maseko says the IFP has become a shadow of its former self in recent years.

This, he argues, is partly because of the rise of the National Freedom Party (NFP) in KZN and the tenure of former president Jacob Zuma.

But the IFP is also responsible for its own decline.

Maseko says that, much the like ANC, the IFP has a history of bloodshed in the province and has been marred by political violence and killings.

He argues that factional battles within the party have had a detrimental effect.

The IFP has also been plagued by their own internal turbulence, just like the ANC.

The IFP looks like its a party that is going through tumultuous times and may implode when Mangosuthu Buthelezi finally steps down and elects another leader.

Politics writer Paddy Harper adds that a lack of succession plan and inability to demonstrate governance has also worked against the IFP.

The party has never had a succession plan.
