The demand came after the Human Settlement Dept confirmed plans for affordable housing in the City but had no set timelines.

Western Cape's Human Settlements MEC, Bonginkosi Madikizela during his budget speech on Tuesday has confirmed plans for affordable housing in the City but has not set timelines.

Cape Town activist organisation, Ndifuna Ukwazi has demanded to see the budget and timelines for affordable housing plans in the city.

The group's head of political organising, Nkosikhona Swaartbooi says there were numerous promises made about housing since 1994 and none of them have been met.

It is important for us to note that our Constitution guarantees the poor and working class a right to decent housing and access to land.

Nkosikhona Swaartbooi, Head of Political Organizing - Ndifuna Ukwazi

Even after the Constitution was adopted we're still having to see the remnants of apartheid that coloured and black people are still segregated from the city.

Nkosikhona Swaartbooi, Head of Political Organizing - Ndifuna Ukwazi

In Cape Town there are many empty fields and golf courses, and we are asking that how is it that in the middle of housing crisis that our government continues to use the best lands in this way?

Nkosikhona Swaartbooi, Head of Political Organizing - Ndifuna Ukwazi

Swaartbooi explains that affordable housing should be afforded to people earning between R1500 and R7500.

We have a lot of security guards and domestic workers who have existed in the inner city of Cape Town with no formal housing.

Nkosikhona Swaartbooi, Head of Political Organizing - Ndifuna Ukwazi

The only form of housing is in the backyards where they are subjected to harsh rules...
