Sars commissioner appointment process was transparent - Ismail Momoniat

A special commission set up by President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed Edward Kieswetter as the new Sars Commissioner.

Speaking to CapeTalk's Kieno Kammies, one of the members of the Sars commissioner appointment panel, Ismail Momoniat highlights the process that led to the appointment of Kieswetter.

He says the panel made recommendations to the president who then made the final appointment decision.

The panel took into account the challenges that Sars faces and we drew up some criteria, the most important being that we needed someone who could turn around Sars after what it's been through over the last four years.

Momoniat says Sars still has a long way to go until it can restore its 2014 glory.

The government is in the process of responding to every recommendation made by Judge Nugent.

He says the process of fixing Sars is underway.

Appointing the commissioner was an important step but there's more that needs to be done.

The panel has come under criticism for lack of transparency, not allowing the media to observe the process of appointing the commissioner.

But Momoniat denies this.

The steps we followed were exactly as the Nugent Commission outlined.

The question of whether the interviews should have been made public - it is certainly not the norm with every job and it can have an impact on people applying. There may be good people who decide not to apply.
