Robbings on Golden Arrow buses

The City of Cape Town says Golden Arrow must pay half the costs for bus security.

The City of Cape Town has responded to a number of crime incidents happening on the Golden Arrow Bus Service.

Mayco member for safety and security, JP Smith has admitted that the bus service contacted the City seeking assistance in dealing with crime on their buses.

According to reports, there have been 20 robbings of commuters on the bus in the last four months.

Smith says they presented the bus services with a rent-a-cop option and indicated that it can be met the company halfway in terms of costs.

The problem is that they said to us can you do for Golden Arrow what you are doing for Prasa? Then we will have to think of all the other transport services like metred taxis and minibus taxis because they are also asking us for help.

Smith explains that the reason there are very few crimes on MyCiti bus service is that it has a dedicated unit that looks after it, called the IRT unit.

He says if Golden Arrow wants the same kind of unit they must be willing to pay for it.

They will have to factor that into their overall budget...

Golden Arrow is a private bus company that gets a subsidy from the provincial government. MyCity is a city-run bus service so when we created the service one of the things we factored in was the running costs security plans.
