ANC Gauteng deputy- chairperson Panyaza Lesufi disputes these claims that the protest is politically orchestrated by the ANC.

Protesting Alexandra residents are marching to the Sandton local municipal offices on Monday.

Residents last week implemented a shutdown of the township with residents unhappy about service delivery in the area.

EWN reporter Ayanda Nyathi, covering the march, says the protestors are at the municipal offices.

A very lively crowd is singing outside these offices as they wait to be addressed by officials inside.

Ayanda Nyathi, Reporter - EWN

The protest movement is comprised of many voices claiming to have the authority of what the plan of action will be, he explains.

We have heard several kinds of plans of what the action will be, but to be frank, there hasn't been murmur to shutdown Sandton.

Ayanda Nyathi, Reporter - EWN

The plan we heard from Sandile Mavundla was to come to the regional offices in Sandton and hand over a memorandum and head back to Alex.

Ayanda Nyathi, Reporter - EWN

That being said, there is no telling of what might happen next. I mean there has been sporadic moments where the crowd almost got out of control. There is a heavy police presence and they have been with us since the morning.

Ayanda Nyathi, Reporter - EWN

I wouldn't scratch the possibility of people veering off the plan from this morning.

Ayanda Nyathi, Reporter - EWN

Nyathi reports that there was a scuffle with police as the march reached Grayston Drive.

The police created a man shield barricading protestors from proceeding onto Grayston Drive. It appeared that police were resolute that no person would pass that point with any tires.

Ayanda Nyathi, Reporter - EWN

There have been allegations that this protest is politically orchestrated with Democratic Alliance (DA) and the Economic Freedom Fighters accusing the African National Congress (ANC) of using the protest for political gain.

ANC Gauteng deputy chairperson Panyaza Lesufi disputes these claims.

Every time the DA cannot deal with a situation on the ground, the quickest area is to blame the ANC even if there is no cause for it.

Panyaza Lesufi, Gauteng deputy chairperson - ANC

For example, did we issue a statement as the ANC that we wanted to shut down Alexandra? Surely not. Did you see leaders of the ANC in front of those marches? Surely not.

Panyaza Lesufi, Gauteng deputy chairperson - ANC

The problem is the obsession of the DA against the ANC is blindfolding them to not concentrate on the work they need to run a government.

Panyaza Lesufi, Gauteng deputy chairperson - ANC

He says the DA is cherry-picking and trying to score political points in their attack against the ANC.

He says before 1994, there was no township called Tsusumani in Alexandra and there is now.

Before 1994, there wasn't a township called Far East Bank. There is now. I can go on about the houses that the ANC has built in that area.

Panyaza Lesufi, Gauteng deputy chairperson - ANC

The main housing development called Alexandra Renewal was stopped in 2012 by property owners.

Panyaza Lesufi, Gauteng deputy chairperson - ANC

Alexandra has a unique feature and unlike other townships, residents own their plots and houses, so you can't remove them if you have to develop that area.

Panyaza Lesufi, Gauteng deputy chairperson - ANC

Those people wanted to be compensated and took local government to court and the matter was resolved.

Panyaza Lesufi, Gauteng deputy chairperson - ANC

He says when the DA government came to power in 2016, they chose not to complete the Alexandra Renewal project.
