[LISTEN]Understanding the SKA telescope project

The Square Kilometer Array project, aimed at building the world's largest radio telescope. will enable astronomers to monitor the sky in detail and thousands of times faster than any system currently in existence.

South Africa has established a critical role, in partnership with other countries, to oversee the initiative conceptualised in the 80's.

Azania spoke to Dr Adrian Tiplady to understand the importance of the project being co-located in Africa.

A project like the SKA can have such a significant socio-eocnomic impact on South Africa and South Africans, on the participation of South African scientists and engineers.

Dr Adrian Tiplady, Specialist - SKA Projects

There are so many potential spin off's and benefits that we can derive. As I have been part of the project, I have seen how the rest of the world has perceived South Africa's expertise and competence.

Dr Adrian Tiplady, Specialist - SKA Projects

Tiplady shares more on the history of the project and its impact on the future.

There are a couple of experiments that took place that really pushed scientists, they sat around and came up with the beginnings of an idea to build something that was a hundred times more powerful, more technically advanced than anything that has ever been built in history in terms of radio astronomy facility.
