Alex Shutdown: Politicians interested in power at people's expense says analyst

Alexandra protests
Political analyst Dr Ntsikelelo Breakfast says political parties are playing politics instead of delivering services in Alexandra.

Service delivery protests across South Africa have intensified with more communities demanding to be heard ahead of the national elections, with Alexandra township making the most recent headlines.

The Alexandra Shutdown has led to President Cyril Ramaphosa promising to visit the township on Thursday to hear residents grievances.

Speaking to #702Breakfast's Bongani Bingwa broadcasting live from the township, political analyst Dr Ntsikelelo Breakfast says the Alexandra shutdown is not a simple service delivery protest.

In as much as there is a social conflict that has broken down and a class struggle, we need to appreciate that elections are around the corner and party politics are in the mix.

Dr Ntsikelelo Breakfast, Political analyst

The African National Congress (ANC) was dislodged from the helm of power in 2016 and it has always wanted to bounce back to the helm.

Dr Ntsikelelo Breakfast, Political analyst

At the same time, the Democratic Alliance (DA) does not want to take full responsibility for the situation at play, simply because it wants to advance the narrative that it runs a big municipality.

Dr Ntsikelelo Breakfast, Political analyst

The Constitution makes provision for all spheres of government - local, provincial and national - to work together in the pursuit of developing communities, he adds.

The inhabitants should come before politicians, but I think the problem is that the latter here comes first.

Dr Ntsikelelo Breakfast, Political analyst

Politicians are interested in power and they sometimes do that at the expense of the needs of the people.
