#FridayProfile: Dr Same Mduli on breathing new life into SA's artistic heritage

Described as an exciting, youthful voice on the contemporary art scene, writer and artist Dr Same Mduli is part of a new wave of women taking on the historically male-dominated role of curator.

Standard Bank recently announced the appointment of Mdluli as the new manager of the Standard Bank Gallery in Johannesburg.

Mdluli has stepped into the role with the bold 'A Black Aesthetic' exhibition which is on show until 18 April.

It displays the work of black artists active between 1970 and 1990.

She sat down with Azania for this week's Friday Profile, saying she simply wants to share this amazing collection that speaks to South Africa's rich heritage.

For me it was to share this collection that speaks about our past and heritage that I feel we have neglected for so long. It focuses on the Fort Hare collection, so it is mainly a body of work from that collection.

I was struck by how people have always known about these artists. An amazing kind of organic thing that has been happening around the exhibition is the stories that people are coming with.

My main intention was to bring this archive out of this storage space and breathe new life to it. Once it is in a public platform then as a curator, it is about guiding a kind of narrative that will help people make sense of it.
