Elon Musk – the creator of Paypal, SpaceX, Tesla and Solar City – is on a quest to save the planet (and make gazillions while he’s at it).

He wants to open up space for the common man and colonise Mars.

Musk is a real-life Tony Stark (aka Iron Man).

In “How the Billionaire CEO of SpaceX and Telsa is shaping our future” author Ashlee Vance tells the story of Musk’s spectacular, drama-filled life.

Musk was freakishly intelligent and brutally bullied at school in Pretoria because of it.

He blossomed academically and paid his way at the University of Pennsylvania by converting his house into a club where he organised huge parties.

In 2002 eBay bought Paypayl from him for $1.5 billion.

When they forced him out he risked his fortune on space-rockets and electric cars.

Vance also touches on Musk's growing technological fixations and many failed relationships.

How the Billionaire CEO of SpaceX and Telsa is shaping our future” paints Musk as the Steve Jobs of the present and future.

Scroll down to listen to The Money Show presenter Bruce Whitfield’s interview of Vance who discusses Musk and his book.

I interviewed more than 300 people for this book to separate fact from fiction. I got closer to Elon than any reporter ever has.

Ashlee Vance

He is very hard on employees, just like Steve Jobs was. He’s also a bit like Richard Branson in how he relishes the spotlight and uses it to his advantage.

Ashlee Vance

Elon had an unpleasant childhood and doesn’t easily talk about his dad.

Ashlee Vance

The stuff Elon comes up with sounds crazy, but you must take him seriously.

Ashlee Vance

There’s a lot I like about Elon. But he’s not the guy you’d like to have a beer with at a cricket match. He’s got a huge ego, but he’s surprisingly down to Earth.

Ashlee Vance

If Tesla can sell a mainstream electric car for below $35 000; then Elon would’ve changed the world.
