'Imagine going to the bush to use the toilet, it's humiliating!'

An Eastern Cape school in the south of Butterworth is without flush toilets. This is due to the education alleged failure to pay the mobile toilet supplier for units brought in to replace the open pit latrines which were demolished.

Initially, they brought mobile toilets on 11 January and we were expecting to have permanent ones before they were taken.

On the third and fourth of April, the service provider came and took the toilets. Both teachers and pupils are affected by this.

It was only when a grade three pupil almost drowned using an open pit latrine that this issue made the news, she says.

This situation is humiliating. It is humiliating to the pupils and teachers and it affects everyone. Imagine going to the bush to use the toilet, it's humiliating.

She says the department has told them that it will address the matter 'sooner rather than later'.
