There was sinister motive to remove Dramat and Sibiya, McBride tells commission

Former Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) head Robert McBride on Monday told the Zondo Commission of Inquiry into state capture about the Werksmans report which ex-police minister Nathi Nhleko used to justify suspending some officials.

The report was initiated by Nhleko to investigate McBride's handling of the Zimbabwe rendition.

EWN Barry Bateman says McBride explained to the commission how it came about that there was a preliminary report and a final one.

The preliminary report had implicated former Hawks boss Anwa Dramat and Gauteng commander Shadrack Sibiya in the unlawful deportation of Zimbabwean suspects but the final report found that there was no evidence to implicate them.

It was on those basis that it was found there was interference by McBride.

He [McBride] says that he doesn't understand how people at Werksmans Attorneys could not understand that there had been two reports.

According to Bateman, McBride concluded that there was a sinister motive behind this and that there were people who wanted Dramat and Sibiya out of the organisation.

Bateman has confirmed that Dramat and Sibiya have filed to appear before the Zondo Commission, which he says will strengthen McBride's evidence.

McBride's testimony will be followed by that of former KwaZulu Natal Hawks head Johan Booysen. But Bateman says it looks like it will be pushed to a day later as the commission is going through the finer details of McBride's testimony.

It's still a whole lot to come in terms of evidence related to the justice system.
