More woes for SABC, COO Maroleng found guilty of breaching fiduciary duties

With barely a week on the job, the new South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) board will have to decide the fate of two executives.

Group chief operations officer (COO) Chris Maroleng has been found guilty of three charges related to gross negligence and breaching fiduciary duties as a director.

Ray White spoke to Media Monitoring Africa director William Bird about what this means for the SABC and its stability.

This one isn't a deliberately engineered crisis like the financial one and the one about the appointment of the board.

Bird says the SABC is a difficult environment to go into and the position of COO has always been met with serious challenges.

Prior to this, we had a huge amount of direct political interference in the running of the SABC. It has always not been so surprising that it is a difficult position to hold and for people to stay there for a couple of years.

On the other hand, Tshifiwa Mulaudzi, who heads the public broadcaster’s commercial enterprise, was suspended last week.
