ANC veterans call on Ramaphosa to act against Magashule over racist utterance

African National Congress (ANC) veterans have called on President Cyril Ramaphosa to take strong action against secretary-general Ace Magashule for what they say are racist utterances made while campaigning at the weekend.

On his campaign visit in Philippi, Magashule told residents that they must not vote for umlungu - a white person.

Magashule also handed R400 to a resident, seemingly in contravention of the Electoral Code of Conduct.

Party veteran Mavuso Msimang says Magashule's racial utterances are 'un-ANC'.

It is racist, there is no other word for it.

Mavuso Msimang, Veteran - ANC

We think Ramaphosa should take the strongest action to say this is not how the ANC addresses the electorate South African. The ANC adheres to the constitution and all the things that regard South Africans, black or white, as equal.

Mavuso Msimang, Veteran - ANC

We really think it is bad, of all parties, that the ANC should be doing this. He has to be reprimanded because it is wrong.

Mavuso Msimang, Veteran - ANC

Asked about the supposed two centres of power in the party, Msimang says there is no denying that there are factions within the organisation but the top six essentially make decisions.

Those officials, sit, talk and make decisions. If there are differences among them, the prevalent voice or authority is the ANC position and the ANC position in this particular case would be one that is adhered to by the people who say the ANC does not believe in racism.

Mavuso Msimang, Veteran - ANC

I don't know about the centres of power, whether there are two or three, what I know is Cyril Ramaphosa was elected by the majority at the last conference.
