[LISTEN] #RoadToElections: 'The ANC has all its eggs in the Ramaphosa basket'

Mapungubwe Institute for Strategic Reflection director of research Professor Susan Booysen says it is possible to win an election on the reputation of one man, especially in the case of President Cyril Ramaphosa.

According to Booysen, Ramaphosa is currently the only leader in the ruling party who appeals to the electorate.

She says the president embodies the African National Congress's (ANC's) new character.

He symbolises what a new resurgent ANC is all about.

We can look in his faction. Who are the alternative leaders? DD Mabuza is not exactly it. Ace Magashule is not it. There are a few other ANC names there but they are not in the stakes to run.

Those eggs are in the Ramaphosa basket.

In addition to Ramaphosa, Booysen says the ANC has a lot more to offer. She says the party is multi-layered and has nurtured its struggle credentials.

It really guards those so closely. It has a continuous playback on the unending struggle and in many ways the decolonisation debate emphasise the continuous structural legacies of apartheid. As long as those are there, the ANC can make a legitimate case that, yes, the struggle continues.

While young people will be split between several political parties, Booysen believes many of them will stay with the ANC.

Speaking on scandals like Bosasa which implicate the president, Booysen says this may leave some imprint but it also brings about an awareness that there is no 'clean' president.

Even more than that, Cyril Ramaphosa's ability to lead this economy is really a crucial factor and should citizens start believing that he is the person who can get South Africa beyond Eskom and state-owned enterprises and their shenanigans, then the party will be fine.
