DA must prove allegations that protests are politically motivated - Verwoerd

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has stated that the burst of violent protests in Cape Town and Johannesburg townships are suspicious as they only occur in DA-led areas.

It suspects the protests are politically motivated.

DA leader Mmusi Maimane has approached the Speaker of Parliament, Baleka Mbete to request an urgent ad hoc joint committee be formed to look into the protests.

Author and former MP Melanie Verwoerd says the DA needs to prove these allegations before making accustions against the ANC.

The Electoral Act is very clear on this, that if any politician or political party can be proven to invoke violence or violent protests they can be fined, and the electoral commission can even stop them from having public meetings and participating in elections.

You can't stop politicians from encouraging people to protest; it is only when it becomes violent that it becomes a problem.

Verwoerd also commented on ANC secretary general Ace Magashule's conduct while campaigning in Phillippi, Cape Town, where he handed out R400 to a woman after opening her empty fridge.

It is illegal, according to the Electoral Act to use state money to buy food or encourage people to vote for you.
