After Johannesburg mayor Herman Mashaba was barred from addressing Alexandra residents in Marlboro on Monday evening, he joins #702Breakfast's Bongani Bingwa.

Mashaba had failed to visit the area after residents implemented a shutdown, citing unhappiness over service delivery.

We need to be very careful and not start changing the narrative that is well orchestrated, we have to differentiate between the plight of Alexandra residents and the orchestrated violent protests by the ANC.

Herman Mashaba, City of Johannesburg mayor

I would advise that you get a copy of the presentation that I was going to make yesterday, I went out of my normal prescribed legislative framework so that I deal with the issues of Alexandra.

Herman Mashaba, City of Johannesburg mayor

The presentation shows how these so-called leaders of Alexandra looted the city's money, I have their names and the process they followed.

He urges people to look at the Integrated Development Plan (IDP) that he was going to present at the meeting as IDPs are about listening to the people.

From September last year, we went to all the communities and took their complaints, working with willing councillors.

Herman Mashaba, City of Johannesburg mayor

I took those complaints and then it became my responsibility as the mayor before I finalise my budget to go and listen to the community in order to see if their issues have been addressed.

Herman Mashaba, City of Johannesburg mayor

I find it strange that all of sudden ANC councillors are claiming that they didn't know about the venue.

Herman Mashaba, City of Johannesburg mayor

He is surprised by South Africans saying he didn't want to address what is happening in Alexandra.

On the day that this sudden protest erupted, I immediately sent one of my senior guys there and look at how he was racially abused.

Herman Mashaba, City of Johannesburg mayor

I find this very strange that this matter is totally overlooked. Because Micheal Son is of Chinese descent, no one worries about him. He was hackled in front of the media, no one said anything. Then people say I didn't take this matter seriously.

Herman Mashaba, City of Johannesburg mayor

Mashaba believes that the people that disrupted the meeting on Monday were drunk.

Also joining the conversation, convener of the #AlexTotalShutdown Sandile Mavundla says the residents of Alexandra feels disrespected by Mashaba thus they disrupted the meeting.

The mayor made a blunder, you can't insult people on social media and call them drunkards and that they were given money by the ANC.

Sandile Mavundla, Convener - #AlexTotalShutdown

That was wrong, he was supposed to retract all those statements and apologise publicly.

Sandile Mavundla, Convener - #AlexTotalShutdown

Mashaba is clouding issues, the purpose of that meeting was for the IDP and not engage with Alexandra issues.

Sandile Mavundla, Convener - #AlexTotalShutdown

Mavundla is adamant that Mashaba was supposed to apologise to the Alexandra community before the scheduled meeting.
