[LISTEN] Motoring: How Volvo is changing the future of driving

Volvo Cars is for the first time making its safety knowledge easily accessible in a central digital library, encouraging the car industry to promote car safety.

Volvo Cars 'Project E.V.A' commemorates sixty years worth of sharing research into car safety with the world, but also highlights a fundamental issue with inequality in terms of car safety development.

Azania spoke to Volvo Cars South Africa's managing director Greg Maruszweski about what the car manufacturer is doing as a result of data they have collected over the years.

One of the most important innovations introduced sixty years ago is the three-point safety belt.

Volvo has a number of inventions like the three-point safety belt which we saw right from the beginning as being the key factor in safety. The decision was made not to patent it but to share it with the automotive industry.

Greg Maruszweski, Managing director - Volvo Cars SA

Explaining the concept behind 'Project E.V.A', Maruszweski says this includes a study conducted over the past 40 years, extracting data from real-life accidents.

We have a team of people in Sweden going out to all the serious accidents involving Volvos and they use those learnings to develop the next generation of cars. We use that data to be able to develop cars which is not safe for just for the average person but all the people in our cars.
