The family of struggle icon Chief Albert Luthuli is currently in a legal battle to get access to two areas of land it is believed to have lost in the 1700s.
The family’s land claim is currently before the high court in Pietermaritzburg where it’s trying to reclaim land in Montebello, north-west of Durban, which consists of 32 privately owned farms, as well as Njubanjuba, which is also located north of the city.
According to Luthuli Family land claim committee treasurer Phillip Luthuli, his relatives were forcefully removed from the areas in the 1700s.
He says it will take some time before the matter is resolved.
It is quite a long stretch and will take some time before it is resolved.— Phillip Luthuli, Treasurer of the Luthuli family land claim committee
Luthuli says farmers have agreed to willingly move off the land.
We have got people farming on those lands; one is for farming, forestry, sugar cane and livestock and the farmers there are aware of this. They are agreeing to moving.— Phillip Luthuli, Treasurer of the Luthuli family land claim committee

It is important for us to get government involved.— Phillip Luthuli, Treasurer of the Luthuli Family Land Claim Committee
We prefer the legal route to give legality to this matter, it is not like taking land from people who are apparently using it. Government is supportive at the moment, it is still a long road.— Phillip Luthuli, Treasurer of the Luthuli Family Land Claim Committee
