First printed 3D heart unveiled

Scientists in Israel have unveiled a 3D print of a heart with human tissue and vessels. They say this advances possibilities for transplants.

The scientists add that the heart, which is about the size of a rabbit's, marked the first time anyone anywhere has successfully engineered and printed an entire heart replete with cells, blood vessels, ventricles and chambers.

John Maytham spoke to the head of University of cape Town's (UCT's) biomaterials research department Professor Deon Bezuidenhout about the breakthrough.

The technology has been around to print 3D basic structures.
