Judge rules in favour of land claimants in contempt of court application

The Western Cape High Court has ruled in favour of land claimants in a case against Rural Development and Land Reform Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane.

The District Six Working Committee is one of the applicants who brought a contempt of court application against Nkoana-Mashabane in response to a November 2018 ruling.

The case, which was heard on Wednesday, seeks to have Nkoana-Mashabane appear before the court.

She has been accused of failing to comply to a ruling ordering government to come up with a comprehensive plan to satisfy the restitution needs of hundreds of land claimants.

Claimants argue that what government has submitted is not the comprehensive plan that Judge Jody Kollapen had ordered in November 2018.

Nkoana-Mashabane has been ordered to appear in court on 17 May.

The judge ruled in favour of the claimants and has ordered that the minister appear in court on the 17th of May and that she file an asking affidavit by the 6th of May.
