The Electoral Code of Conduct Observer Commission has called on politicians to town down on campaign rhetoric.
In its statement, the commission says a free and fair election is not determined by only what happens on election day. While campaigning is fundamental to any election, character assassination is as devastating as physical violence.
John Maytham spoke to commission chairperson Archbishop Thabo Makgoba about why they felt the need to speak up.
