[LISTEN] Who has been funding SA's political parties?
Nonprofit organisation My Vote Counts (MVC) has released a report with information on private funding of political parties through donations and other financial transfers.
Transparency around political party funding has been a much-debated topic for years in South Africa.
Earlier this year, President Cyril Ramaphosa signed the Political Party Funding Bill into law but it has yet to be implemented.
The MVC report details a list of donations given to five major political parties which are African National Congress (ANC), Democratic Alliance (DA), Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Inkatha Freedom Party and the United Democratic Movement (UDM).
Gushwell Brooks, standing in for Karima Brown, spoke to to MVC political systems researcher Zahira Grimwood to find out more.
Grimwood explains that the report was put together using publicly available information and that they cannot claim to have all the information on political parties' private funding.
In anticipation of the act not being implemented before the elections, My Vote Counts started to compile information by referring to a lot of reports by investigative journalists.Zahira Grimwood, Political systems researcher - My Vote Counts (MVC)
In each of the five political parties we have referred to, there has been an allocation made by corrupt private entities. We feel that there is a lot more information available on the ANC.Zahira Grimwood, Political systems researcher - My Vote Counts (MVC)
The Guptas for example also donated to the UDM and they have admitted they received R 100 000 from the Guptas. Sarah Computers for example allocated money to the DA on more than one occasion. The EFF, what is well know is the case of Mazzotti.Zahira Grimwood, Political systems researcher - My Vote Counts (MVC)
