The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has ordered the Democratic Alliance (DA) to apologise to Good Party leader Patricia De Lille for claiming that she was fired from her position as Cape Town mayor.
Eusebius McKaiser speaks to DA's principal representative Mike Moriarty to hear the party's side of the story.
Did the DA fire Patricia de Lille?— Eusebius McKaiser, Presenter
We get asked, all the time why did you fire Patricia de Lille? And in response to that question, we give the answer that we did what we did, and yes, the word does contain fire.— Mike Moriarty, Principal representative - DA
When the complaint came our way, we took it to our lawyers and asked whether we are in trouble or not, and they assured us that we are expressing an opinion which is in terms of the judgement that was handed down by the ConCourt five years ago.— Mike Moriarty, Principal representative - DA
When probed further as to whether the DA fired De Lille, Moriarty adds that they started a process to fire De Lille.
I think it is evident that we wanted Patricia de Lille to go, she wanted to go, she told you that, it was on your show that she made that declaration.— Mike Moriarty, Principal representative - DA
It is not about her; it is about whether or not the IEC has the powers to make judgements in the way that they have. The IEC is not a court.— Mike Moriarty, Principal representative - DA
Moriarty is adamant that the DA went through the process of disciplinary action and De Lille used every obstruction to hamper the process.
We were determined to fire De Lille, and there is no question about that. There is going to be a judge that will decide that whether or not us using the word fired is valid in this circumstance. Let us leave it to the courts.— Mike Moriarty, Principal representative - DA
It is a simple question, yes or no, did you fire the lady as you call her?— Eusebius McKaiser, Presenter
Eusebius, it is my opinion and it is fair for me to say, we fired De Lille.— Mike Moriarty, Principal representative - DA
Can you deal with a non-legal question, did you fire Patricia de Lille?— Eusebius McKaiser, Presenter
We wanted Patricia de Lille to go, Patricia de Lille went. That is the outcome that we wanted, that is what I call firing, and that is what it is.— Mike Moriarty, Principal representative - DA
